Phil Gould has advised Laurie Daley to ignore outside influences as he gears up to make crucial selection choices for Origin I.
Daley faces several dilemmas, particularly with the No.6 jersey, which will likely see a contest between Jarome Luai and Mitchell Moses.
There is also considerable speculation surrounding Jake Trbojevic’s place in the squad, despite his role as captain last year.
Daley’s last tenure as coach of the Blues ended in 2017 when his contract was terminated after securing just one series victory out of five attempts.
However, he did manage to halt the Maroons’ dominance back in 2014.

Throughout his previous term, there was a perception that Daley was overly lenient with players, a claim he refuted in an interview on 100% Footy.
“That’s how it appeared to people from the outside, but I consider myself a different type of coach compared to Craig Bellamy or Michael Maguire. Everyone has their style, and I believe I’ve maintained strong connections with my players,” he shared.
“Ultimately, we simply weren’t up to the standard, and I recognise I need to improve. I will enhance my performance and strive to create an environment where these players can truly excel.”

Pondering the matter, Paul Gallen, who played under Daley, disagreed with the notion that Daley was perceived as lenient.
“I thought he was excellent. I enjoyed my time under Laurie Daley and have a great rapport with him, which continues to this day. The remark about players supposedly taking advantage of him took me by surprise because everyone held him in high regard for what he achieved in the game, and as a coach,” he stated.
“He was outstanding, and I anticipate he will excel in his role.”
Former Blues coach Phil Gould, who previously worked alongside Daley, believes the issues during Daley’s last stint stemmed from trying to appease external voices.
“The idea that he was too lenient with players is completely unfounded. I don’t believe he was soft on them,” Gould asserted.
“In his last coaching role, he appeared to be influenced by external opinions regarding selections. If you’re going to take on that position, your choices need to be your own. I would advise him to assert his independence.
“He understands what an Origin player looks like, he knows what Origin football entails as well as anyone, and he must have confidence in his own judgement.”

For Daley, the most challenging selection dilemma revolves around Moses.

The Eels halfback played a pivotal role in the Blues’ series victory last year; however, with Nathan Cleary’s return, he now finds himself competing for the No.6 spot.
“I consider this our most challenging decision. I’m certainly contemplating Mitch Moses strongly for the six position, as his running ability fits well with State of Origin,” he remarked.
“Regardless of the combination we choose, it’s bound to be difficult as all three contenders deserve a spot.”
On 100% Footy, Moses advocated for his selection to Daley, articulating why he would be an asset to the Blues.
“I feel quite at ease operating on the left side of the field, but I’ve primarily played on the right as I’m a right-footed kicker and have taken on more of the kicking responsibilities,” he explained.
“… playing at six alongside Nathan would be amazing. I’ve never had a halfback before who has commanded the game while allowing me to pick my moments. That truly excites me… I believe this could be an effective partnership.”
