On Thursday, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim stated that his team’s journey to the Europa League final will be in vain if they do not secure victory against Tottenham in the final match in Bilbao later this May.
Amorim’s struggling squad convincingly advanced to the final with a dominant 7-1 aggregate victory over Athletic Bilbao.
Set to face off in the Basque Country on May 21, the 15th-placed Premier League outfit will go up against 16th-placed Spurs, with the winning side guaranteed a place in the next season’s Champions League.
“It’s the least we can do for our supporters, given the backing they’ve shown us during this challenging season,” Amorim remarked to TNT Sports after United dispatched Athletic 4-1 in the second leg at Old Trafford on Thursday.
“I’m already feeling the pressure ahead of the final. If we do not succeed, everything we’ve achieved will mean nothing, but we’re pleased to be there, so we shall see.”
“I know I should be a better manager, and the team should be performing at a higher level right now, but we are making efforts. We’ve done relatively well in Europe, yet we continue to struggle in the Premier League.”
Tottenham reached the final with a 5-1 aggregate win over Norwegian team Bodo/Glimt.
Ange Postecoglou’s side has faced similar difficulties this season, recognising that triumph in the Europa League is their only chance to salvage a disappointing campaign.
Tottenham has already bested United three times this season, securing victories of 3-0 and 1-0 in the Premier League and 4-3 in the League Cup.
“We need to have a fully fit squad against Tottenham, maintain our focus, and perhaps have a stroke of luck. We must be clinical in front of goal,” said Amorim.
“The situation is quite similar for both Ange and myself. We’re each facing tough moments, and only one of us will emerge victorious. It’s going to be a significant final, and we’ll aim to triumph.”
