Who would genuinely want to steer an NRL team as head coach?
The pressure is building for Jason Ryles following a gut-wrenching 20-16 loss to the Dolphins at CommBank Stadium on Thursday.
In a fiercely contested match, Parramatta seemed poised to pull ahead in the second half before a series of critical blunders shifted the tide.
Herbie Farnworth’s impressive long-range solo try, which saw him navigate through some lazy defending before outpacing Isaiah Iongi, initiated a swing in momentum for the visitors.
A crusher tackle that left Farnworth down on the field, combined with Mitchell Moses venting his frustration at the referee, allowed the Dolphins to take an eight-point advantage.

Despite the disappointment, Parramatta fought back, with Dylan Brown scoring to ignite hopes of a thrilling finish. Yet, fate intervened as Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow executed a remarkable try-saving tackle with less than 30 seconds remaining.
The late-game drama and missed opportunities weighed heavily on Ryles, who is still navigating the beginnings of his head coaching journey in the top grade.

Cameron Smith, a former teammate and league legend, remarked that Ryles exhibits reactions reminiscent of Storm head coach Craig Bellamy, with whom he worked closely as an assistant before joining the Eels.
“He’ll definitely be disappointed, particularly with several key moments,” Smith observed during the post-match analysis on Nine.
“Some of the reactions we’ve witnessed tonight echo that classic Craig Bellamy style—storming to the back of the box and banging on the desk and the glass.”

While the visual depiction of the game may not be ideal, there’s still plenty of positivity surrounding the Eels’ direction, despite their current position at the bottom of the ladder.
In the post-game media briefing, Ryles highlighted the inexperience of the players on the pitch against the Dolphins, expressing his belief that improvements are on the horizon after a rocky start to the season.
“You have to consider the experience levels of the guys out there—it’s a tough gig in the NRL, and they’re learning through experience,” he noted.
“A wise bloke once said that the scoreboard is the last thing to change. There are countless areas where we’re improving—the players are developing each week and so are we as a team, which is all I can really ask for.”
“We need to ensure we’re not giving teams the little advantages that we have been handing them, as that gives them the momentum to stay competitive with us.”
“I appreciated the effort and the determination in our play. We created chances. Ultimately, however, we fell short; we just weren’t able to execute our opportunities effectively.”
Parramatta will face the Knights next weekend in an effort to escape the bottom of the table, while the Dolphins will go up against the Warriors.
