Former Argentina defender Luis Galván, who was part of the squad that clinched the 1978 World Cup, passed away on Monday at the age of 77, as confirmed by the Argentine Football Association (AFA).
Reports from local media indicate that Galván had been receiving treatment for pneumonia at the Reina Fabiola Clinic in Córdoba for several weeks.
“The AFA and its entire leadership wish to express their deepest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time,” the association stated in a press release on Monday.
Galván played as a centre-back in Argentina’s 3-1 victory against the Netherlands in the World Cup final held in Buenos Aires.
In addition to his World Cup triumph, he represented Argentina at the 1982 World Cup in Spain, accumulating a total of 34 caps for the national team before retiring from international football in 1983.
Galván continued his career at his childhood club, Talleres de Córdoba, where he achieved a club record with 503 appearances over a span of 17 years, playing in two stints—from 1970 to 1982 and then again from 1986 to 1987.
