Dragons head coach Shane Flanagan has refuted allegations of bias towards his son Kyle after dropping Lachlan Ilias from the lineup for this week’s Magic Round encounter.
Ilias has been sidelined following a lacklustre performance in the Dragons’ 46-18 defeat to the Roosters on Anzac Day, paving the way for emerging talent Lyhkan King-Togia to don the No.7 jersey against the Wests Tigers.
This decision ensures Kyle maintains his position as five-eighth.

In an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, Flanagan expressed that he would have no hesitation in excluding Kyle if his performance warranted it. Nonetheless, Kyle has made a strong start to the season.
“Kyle has been one of our standout performers this year,” Flanagan asserted.
“Together with Gutho [Clint Gutherson], they’ve been our top players consistently and often poll votes for the players’ player award each week.
“When you’re performing at that level, it makes decisions easier. Kyle has notched up four tries and has been instrumental in setting up additional ones.
“His form has been commendable. Last year and this year, he has been exceptional. If he doesn’t play well, he won’t play. That’s just the way it is,” he added.
After last week’s significant loss, some commentators were quick to direct criticism towards Kyle.

Despite the Roosters dominating throughout the match, Flanagan still managed to score a try.
“I treat Kyle just like any other player,” Flanagan commented.
“He has been performing exceptionally well. The fans are aware of Kyle’s contributions. Ultimately, all the fans want is for the Dragons to win—and that’s my goal too.”
