Xabi Alonso has remained tight-lipped regarding his future at Bayer Leverkusen, choosing not to address speculation that links him to the managerial position at Real Madrid. When pressed by reporters on Friday, the Spanish manager opted for silence on the matter.
Reports from Spain suggest that Alonso is a leading candidate to succeed Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid should the Italian part ways with the LaLiga side after a disappointing season, despite having another year remaining on his contract.
Alonso previously played under Ancelotti at Real, where he enjoyed a five-year stint that culminated in the club clinching the Champions League title after a lengthy 12-year wait, prior to his transfer to Bayern Munich.
“My future? I have no updates to share; my response is unchanged. We will have to wait,” Alonso stated to the media ahead of Sunday’s match against Freiburg.
“The communication with the club remains positive. There is clarity among all parties involved.”
Last season saw Alonso’s stock rise significantly when he led Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga campaign, securing the club’s first-ever league title, winning the German Cup, and reaching the final of the Europa League.
Although Leverkusen has not replicated that dominant form while attempting to defend their title—now facing a challenge from Bayern Munich, who are just one win away from sealing the championship—Alonso is still eager to conclude the season on a high note.
“It’s still the second-best season in the history of the club, and we aim to keep striving for that goal,” he remarked.
Leverkusen is set to face a Freiburg team sitting in fourth place, keen on securing a Champions League berth.
“They have a significant chance, which will certainly add to their motivation. However, it’s also a source of motivation for us, knowing that the opposition is eager to defeat us,” Alonso noted.
“This contest is incredibly thrilling right now. In our remaining three fixtures, our opponents will be Freiburg, (Borussia) Dortmund, and Mainz, all of whom are vying for European qualification. We can expect intense encounters ahead.”
However, the visitors may be without Nigerian forward Victor Boniface, who has netted 11 goals across all competitions this season.
“He experienced some discomfort in his thigh muscles yesterday and was unable to participate in today’s training,” Alonso explained. “We will assess his fitness ahead of Sunday’s match.”
