Al Ahli winger Riyad Mahrez has urged his teammates to remain vigilant and not let their guard down as the Saudi Pro League outfit aims for their first-ever Asian Champions League title this Saturday against Japan’s Kawasaki Frontale.
The Jeddah-based club, who will enjoy the advantage of a home crowd at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium, is making its third attempt to secure the trophy after previously finishing as runners-up in 1986 and 2012.
Despite a squad featuring high-profile acquisitions such as Mahrez, Roberto Firmino, Ivan Toney, and Franck Kessie entering the final as favourites, the Algerian winger stressed the importance of seizing the moment presented by this significant occasion.
“When you’re competing at this level, you’re primed to win, especially when you’re playing on your home turf,” Mahrez commented.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for us to secure Al Ahli’s first Champions League, and we’re prepared to give it our all.
“Certainly, our opponents aren’t a side we face regularly; they’re from Japan and represent a different challenge. We’ve analysed their game, and we understand the strategy we need to adopt.
“The key is to give everything we have and truly relish the experience. Some people might think finals are a regular occurrence, but for many players, it could be the only final they get to play in their careers. We need to pour our hearts into this and bring the trophy home for Al Ahli.”
At 34, Mahrez is no stranger to triumph, having been part of the Manchester City team that clinched the treble of UEFA Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup in 2023, alongside four other English league titles, notably with Leicester City in 2016.
He also played a pivotal role in Algeria’s victory at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019, but now he is keen to secure his first piece of silverware since moving to Al Ahli from City last year.
“This is a trophy from another continent, in Asia,” Mahrez added, having already scored nine goals in the competition.
“I’ve been fortunate to play alongside some incredible talents in teams that have won numerous trophies. Every trophy and every cup is thrilling when you’re in contention.
“I’m genuinely excited for this match. I can’t wait to win a trophy with this club, and I’m committed to giving everything tomorrow.”
