With Liverpool having secured their 20th Premier League title last weekend, manager Arne Slot remarked that the remaining four fixtures of the season will serve as an opportunity for less frequently used players to gain a head start for the next campaign.
Slot’s team currently holds an insurmountable 15-point advantage over Arsenal, who are second on the table, as they prepare to face Chelsea on Sunday. This clash is crucial for the London side, who are vying for a spot in the Champions League.
“It’s great that we are up against some formidable opponents like Chelsea, Arsenal, Brighton, and Crystal Palace; it presents us with a real challenge,” Slot shared with the media on Friday. “We must treat these matches as the beginning of next season. We aim to win all four games.”
“The line-ups will be different from what we’ve seen over the past 10 months; not every player will change, but expect some rotation. I’m confident in our squad, so I’m not concerned about the potential for losing,” the Dutch manager added.
“I believe several players deserved more playing time earlier in the season based on their training performances and skills. However, I mainly opted for the same squad because I wanted to see how they’re looking ahead to next season, as well as acknowledging their contributions this year.”
Slot mentioned that since Liverpool clinched their record-equalling 20th title with a decisive 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in front of ecstatic fans at Anfield, he has received an influx of congratulatory messages.
“Naturally, many of the messages were heartfelt, and I’ve made an effort to respond to them all,” remarked Slot, who is now the first Dutch manager to lift England’s top football trophy.
“The experience has been incredible, especially on Sunday. It was one of the most memorable days for the players and for me as well. The way the match unfolded, coming from behind and having to fight for the win, and witnessing how much it meant to both players and fans was quite special.”
“The most notable person to reach out to me? I suspect it was (former manager) Jurgen (Klopp). He simply said, ‘Congratulations, now I understand what a special club this is; I’m part of history.’ He was genuinely thrilled for the club and its supporters.”
