Brad Fittler took the field in the inaugural three Anzac Day matches, managing to cross the try line in two of those encounters.
However, his “spectacular” 50-metre solo run during the 2004 showdown is what fans recall most vividly.
With the Roosters trailing 8-2 an hour in, Fittler executed a stunning sidestep to break through the Dragons’ defensive line, followed by another deft movement to evade fullback Ben Hornby, resulting in a truly memorable try.
The call from Ray Warren only added to the excitement of the moment.
“Oh, go Freddy! That was magnificent! Well, age shall not weary them,” he exclaimed passionately from the Nine commentary box.

Fittler expressed that he finds joy in reliving that moment each year.
“Not only do I get to experience the try again, but I can also enjoy Rabs’ commentary,” he stated during an appearance on Nine’s Today show on Friday morning.
“‘Age shall not weary them’. It’s a every year reminder. How slow was I playing back then?”
The Roosters ultimately triumphed 11-8 in what has become one of the most celebrated contests between the two teams.
It marked only the third occasion the Anzac Day clash took place. Fittler noted that, despite initial scepticism from the public, this fixture has successfully honoured the day’s significance.
“When we first took to the field for this game, many were questioning if we were showing disrespect towards the Anzacs,” he reflected.
“Now, it’s clear that bringing so many people together to discuss the Anzacs has been the true essence of this event.”
Fittler recalled that the Roosters would host soldiers to speak with them in the lead-up to the clash, adding depth to its significance.
“Back in those days, everyone volunteered. So, while playing football, you’d think, ‘these blokes volunteered to fight for their country in a war halfway across the planet.’ How can I not find the strength to keep pushing for my teammates?”
“That became the theme of the Anzacs, and on this day, you couldn’t lift your head unless you gave it your all – every part of your body had to strive for greatness.”
