Inaki Williams Shines as Athletic Club Overcomes Las Palmas in His Brother’s Absence

Athletic Club bounced back with a convincing 1-0 victory against Las Palmas, enhancing their prospects for UEFA Champions League qualification in LaLiga.

Following two consecutive wins that lifted Las Palmas out of the relegation zone, they suffered a reality check after a dramatic late win over Atlético Madrid last time out, as Athletic Club took the lead just six minutes into the match.

Inaki Williams showcased his skills, expertly slipping past the Las Palmas defence to net the ball from close range.

While Athletic aims for a top-five finish, their primary focus appears to be the upcoming UEFA Europa League semi-final. This was highlighted when playmaker Oihan Sancet was substituted early as manager Ernesto Valverde managed his team’s priorities.

Las Palmas had moments of possession but failed to create clear-cut chances as the first half slipped away.

After a composed opening period, Athletic ramped up their intensity at the start of the second half, nearly doubling their lead when Alex Berenguer’s header from an inviting Oscar de Marcos cross rattled the crossbar.

Las Palmas’ attack had become isolated, but Adnan Januzaj almost equalised spectacularly. Collecting the ball from 25 yards, the substitute unleashed a stunning dipping half-volley that struck the bar.

This attempt rejuvenated Las Palmas, as Jamie Mata and Marc Conda both had efforts deflected away in quick succession during a late resurgence.

Ultimately, though, Los Leones managed to see out the remaining minutes. This result keeps their formidable home record intact at San Mamés, where they have lost just once since August 2023 (W22, D12), while extending their lead over sixth-placed Real Betis Balompié to nine points. Las Palmas, meanwhile, remain just a point above the relegation zone, with a critical home game against Valencia on the horizon.
