Danish international winger Anders Dreyer has shared with Dutch media outlet Het Laatste Nieuwsblad that when he decided to depart from Belgian club Anderlecht in January, the situation within the club was in complete disarray.
San Diego welcomed Dreyer as their second-ever signing, securing a three-year contract that will keep him at the club through the end of the 2027 MLS season. The move was a permanent transfer from Belgian side R.S.C. Anderlecht at the end of January, and Dreyer believes it was the ideal moment to make his exit from the Belgian club.
“I realised it was time to move on. The situation was chaotic.”
“First, Brian Riemer, who later became the Danish national team coach, was sacked, and then (sports director) Jesper Fredberg had to go. I was Jesper’s first signing, and I had a strong working relationship with Brian. Once that happened, you knew it was time to close that chapter. The club also pressured me to leave,” Dreyer commented.
Moreover, Dreyer came to Riemer’s defence over the criticism regarding his defensive playing style.
“We scored plenty of goals. But what do the fans actually want? Do they prefer thrilling, attacking football that might result in winning only two or three out of five matches? Or do they favour a more structured approach, winning four out of five matches while contending for the title?” Dreyer stated.
The 26-year-old winger spent two seasons at R.S.C. Anderlecht in the Belgian Pro League, featuring in 87 matches, where he netted 31 goals and provided 23 assists across all competitions.
So far, Dreyer has made nine appearances for San Diego, scoring three goals and contributing three assists.
