Billy Smith has shared insights into the “incredibly challenging” injury struggles he has endured throughout his career and the “fantastic” support he has received from league legend Andrew Johns.
The 25-year-old has traversed a more tumultuous path than many players, having made just 29 appearances for the Sydney Roosters since his debut six years ago.
During this period, Smith has remarkably battled through two ACL tears, a significant shoulder injury, a Lisfranc foot injury, a broken jaw, and most recently, an ankle injury that kept him sidelined for the entirety of the 2024 season with the Bondi-based club.
Despite these setbacks, the Roosters have remained steadfast in their support for Smith, who was once a highly-rated talent in both rugby league and rugby union as he came through the ranks.

The lanky centre made his return against South Sydney in round five, shining in a surprising victory over the Broncos the following week, but unfortunately faced suspension in round seven.
This week, Smith is set to feature for the Roosters in the traditional Anzac Day showdown against the Dragons, and he doesn’t intend to take this opportunity lightly after enduring such a difficult stretch.
“The previous 12 months have been incredibly tough for me,” he reflected to 9News Sydney.
“It’s been a constant struggle not knowing when I’ll be back and doubting whether I’ll ever be fit enough to play again.

“It’s the first time in my career that I’ve had to confront that harsh reality.
“I feel like I haven’t yet had the chance to contribute as I’d like in this jersey – not even close – and that motivates me to repay the faith the club has shown in me.”
Smith, who started his junior career with the Kensington Saints, has also found an unexpected mentor in the form of the eighth Immortal.
The two have forged a friendship over the years, and Johns has played a crucial role in assisting the gifted outside back in regaining his place on the field.

“I consider Joey a good mate; he has been fantastic over the past few years—it’s refreshing to hear insights from someone who has been through similar challenges,” Smith expressed.
“He consistently offers me different strategies to enhance my fitness and general life advice, given his vast experience.”
With Smith’s return, Dom Young will be omitted from the side, and Mark Nawaqanitawase will shift to the wing, while Egan Butcher makes his comeback on the bench after a prolonged injury absence.
The Dragons are riding high, having won their last two matches, while the Roosters seek redemption after a disappointing loss to the reigning champions, Penrith.
