NRL legend Willie Mason has once more voiced his disapproval of Tyson Gamble, asserting that the Knights halfback “doesn’t belong in first grade,” especially amid the team’s current losing streak.
Following another disheartening outing against the Sharks on Sunday, Newcastle has now recorded four consecutive defeats after initially starting the season well.
Across their six matches thus far, the Knights have managed to score just 60 points, placing them at the bottom of the attacking charts in the entire competition.

In the recent match against Cronulla, Gamble wore the No. 7 jersey—his first appearance in the top grade this season after recovering from a back injury—while Jack Cogger was unavailable.
Mason’s critical remarks about Gamble’s performance against the Sharks have reignited their brief rivalry from the finals series two seasons ago.
“I’ve had my fair share of clashes with him, but … he doesn’t belong in first grade,” Mason stated during a conversation on the Levels Network podcast.
“He’s not a traditional No. 7. He’s more a bench player. He can’t lead the team.”

“You can’t expect to have Gamble and [Fletcher] Sharpe as your halves … his kicking game leaves much to be desired. Everything about his game is just average.”
“He requires significant support around him. This isn’t the solution.”
Since his arrival at the Knights in 2023, Gamble has played in various roles but has struggled to secure a consistent starting position under coach Adam O’Brien.
Jackson Hastings remains another option for the primary playmaking role, although the former Man of Steel winner has found himself out of favour over the last year.
Next season, Newcastle is set to welcome Dylan Brown to bolster their halves.
