Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard has identified three of his teammates who he believes have the potential to become coaches in the future.
The Gunners have nearly missed out on the Premier League title under their former player and current manager Mikel Arteta. However, Arsenal still has a shot at clinching the Champions League, with the next challenge being Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals. They could then potentially face either Barcelona or Inter Milan.
In an interview with the club’s website, Ødegaard reflected on his childhood and was asked about what he might pursue once he decides to retire from playing.
“Many people ask me if I would consider a coaching role, and to be honest, I’m not sure. I suppose I’ll have to see how I feel towards the end of my career and once I step away from playing,” he shared.
“Having been involved in football for such a long time, it can be quite challenging to completely walk away. It may feel natural to remain in the sport in some capacity, but also, what we do daily is very intense and requires a lot of effort. So, the real question is whether I want more of that or if I would prefer to take a break. That’s something I’ll need to contemplate in due course.”
The Norwegian international was also asked which players in the Arsenal squad he believes could make excellent managers in the future.
“The obvious candidate is Jorginho. He seems genuinely interested in coaching, has significant experience, and is quite knowledgeable with a strong tactical understanding of the game. He would make a natural manager,” Ødegaard said.
“I also think Jurrien Timber could be a contender. I’m not certain if he’s thinking about coaching yet, but he carries himself in a way that suggests it. He already has considerable experience from his time at Ajax and strikes me as an intelligent player. And aside from those two, perhaps Oleksandr Zinchenko? He certainly has the qualities of a coach.”
Both Zinchenko and Jorginho are reportedly considering their futures beyond this season as new sporting director Andrea Berta looks towards the club’s development. The duo may begin preparing for their post-playing careers while likely aiming to obtain their coaching badges.
