Atalanta’s triumph over AC Milan on Sunday has solidified their hold on a Champions League position for the upcoming season, and manager Gian Piero Gasperini has expressed no regrets about the fact that they are no longer in the running for the Serie A title.
This season, Gasperini’s team experienced an impressive 11-match winning streak that propelled them to the top of the table in December. However, a disappointing spell with four matches without a win has seen Atalanta settle in third place since then.
Earlier on Sunday, Bologna’s narrow 1-0 victory over league leaders Inter Milan put pressure on Atalanta. Nevertheless, Gasperini’s squad responded with a vital 1-0 win at the San Siro, allowing them to maintain a four-point lead over their closest competitors.
“For me, this has been an incredible season; tonight’s win puts us in a strong position to reach the Champions League again, which is an extraordinary achievement and crucial for Bergamo,” Gasperini told DAZN.
“Bologna’s victory could have posed a threat, and coming out on top at San Siro has provided us with a significant turning point.
When asked if he had any regrets about the season, Gasperini was quick to respond.
“Let’s not be silly; how could you have regrets with 64 points?” he stated.
“Yes, we are seven points behind the top two, which is largely due to losing key matches against the leaders.
“However, from a technical perspective, it seems a bit far-fetched to think Atalanta could contend for the Scudetto, especially considering the top teams that are behind us.”
