Kevin De Bruyne, the Manchester City midfielder, has expressed his surprise at the club’s choice not to offer him a contract extension, labelling the move as one influenced by business considerations.
The 33-year-old Belgian, whose current contract ends in June, shared on social media this month that he will part ways with City after a decade of service.
“It was only a few days after I broke the news. It wasn’t a pleasant experience. My family were away on Easter break, so it all felt a bit odd, but that’s how it goes,” De Bruyne told reporters following City’s 2-0 victory over Everton on Saturday.
“I don’t feel inclined to discuss the specifics as it’s more about business for them; they’re making choices based on that.
“It wasn’t a lengthy conversation; it was just their message to me, and then that was it. I have to come to terms with the situation, even though I believe I can still contribute effectively, but that’s how things stand.”
Across his time at City, De Bruyne has featured in 416 matches, netting 107 goals and providing 177 assists, with 120 of those in the Premier League – the second-highest tally, following Ryan Giggs. This season, he has made 23 league appearances amid some fitness struggles.
As he approaches his 34th birthday in June, De Bruyne has been pivotal in City’s success, securing six Premier League titles and the Champions League since joining in 2015.
“I haven’t received any offers throughout the year; they simply made their decision. Naturally, I was a bit taken aback, but I just need to accept it. To be honest, I still believe I can play at this level, as I’ve been demonstrating,” he remarked.
“I’m indifferent now. The decision has been made, and from here on out, I just want to focus on playing football as I always have. I need to think about the future and start having discussions with others.”
