A persistent heart issue has led to Port Adelaide midfielder Ollie Wines being substituted during his team’s match against the Sydney Swans.
The 2021 Brownlow Medal recipient barely lasted a few minutes into the second quarter before being taken off to assess an irregular heartbeat.
Three-time premiership player Alastair Lynch disclosed that Wines had expressed concerns to team doctors prior to the beginning of the second term.

Lynch commented for Fox Footy, “He had extensive discussions with the medical team before he went back on the field, but unfortunately, he only managed about a minute.”
“He has been substituted due to issues with his heart rhythm. It’s not a major concern, but his heart has gone out of sync.”
“I inquired whether it was serious, and although any heart-related matter raises alarm, they seemed comfortable with his current condition. Nonetheless, he had to be subbed out.”
Wines previously disclosed last season that he had been diagnosed with a heart condition in 2022, after being withdrawn from a match and requiring hospital treatment during the club’s defeat to Melbourne.
During that game, Wines noticed he was experiencing dizziness and nausea while playing.
He had been free of any further issues on the field until May last year, when he was substituted during a match against Hawthorn due to a recurrence of his condition.

Despite this incident, he made a return to the field the following week against the Kangaroos.
Wines underwent minor surgery during the off-season to rectify the irregularity, which he had hoped would resolve the issue permanently.
However, it has recurred, leading to Rory Atkins being called up as his replacement.
