Gold Coast Suns coach Damien Hardwick has taken aim at Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan following Saturday night’s loss to Richmond, in response to her remarks regarding Noah Balta. Balta is set to face sentencing in court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to assault.
Competing in his first senior match this season, Balta helped the Tigers secure an 11-point victory over the Suns on the Gold Coast.
The 25-year-old defender faces sentencing after admitting to assault occasioning actual bodily harm stemming from an incident on December 30 in the Riverina, where he attacked a 27-year-old man. This charge carries a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment.
Allan expressed her discontent with the AFL and Richmond after Balta participated in a VFL practice match last weekend, questioning the “message” his inclusion sends to young fans and describing the assault as a “sickening attack”.
Balta was a player under Hardwick’s guidance at Richmond, contributing to the team’s 2020 AFL premiership triumph.

In the aftermath of Saturday night’s game, Hardwick was questioned about whether he or the Suns had concerns regarding Balta participating before his sentencing. This prompted the three-time premiership coach to criticise Allan’s interference.
“Once again, he received a suspension from Richmond and the AFL, with a four-week penalty,” Hardwick said. “At the end of the day, we have a premier who interferes in someone else’s affairs. She should focus on governing the state effectively.”
“It’s an absolute farce for her to make comments on that matter. He’s pled guilty and he understands the consequences he will face.”
Hardwick has reached out to Balta to offer his support, stating, “He’s disappointed in his actions. It’s important we back the individual; he can emerge stronger from this experience. However, the fact remains he played in the game.”

As a consequence of his actions, Balta received a four-match suspension and was obligated to miss both of Richmond’s pre-season games, in addition to undergoing educational programmes, including counselling. Despite his suspension, he was permitted to train with the club.
Following Balta’s selection for the VFL match, Allan raised concerns, saying, “How do we explain to children the AFL’s and Richmond’s actions? What message does this send about right and wrong? I believe this is a question they need to address.
“What a horrendous attack that was, and let’s not forget the victim, who is undoubtedly suffering from the trauma of this incident.”
