Leeds and Burnley have edged closer to securing their spots in the Premier League after both sides maintained a five-point advantage over third-placed Sheffield United at the summit of the Championship on Friday.
Burnley came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory against Watford, thanks to goals from Zian Flemming and Josh Brownhill.
The Clarets have matched a club record by remaining unbeaten in 30 league matches. Manager Scott Parker acknowledges that a win against Sheffield United at Turf Moor on Monday would secure their promotion.
“I’m incredibly proud of this team and all we’ve achieved this season. We’re so close now,” Parker remarked.
“We have the chance to wrap this up on Monday night. Let’s hope we can deliver the result.”
Leeds reclaimed top spot on goal difference following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Oxford, with Manor Solomon netting the only goal in the 33rd minute.
For Leeds, a win against Stoke on Monday will guarantee their promotion if Burnley manages to avoid defeat against the Blades.
Sheffield United reignited their promotion aspirations with a much-needed 2-0 victory against Cardiff, snapping a streak of three losses. Goals from Gustavo Hamer and Ben Brereton Diaz ensured Chris Wilder’s side will finish at least in third place.
“It’s been an emotionally tiring week for everyone involved,” Wilder commented.
“Securing the three points was crucial to keep the pressure on the teams above us.”
Bristol City strengthened their position in the play-off race, establishing a four-point gap with a 2-1 win over Sunderland.
Frank Lampard’s Coventry triumphed 2-0 against West Brom, holding onto sixth place and a three-point advantage over Middlesbrough.
Middlesbrough secured a dramatic 2-1 win against bottom-placed Plymouth, courtesy of a stoppage-time penalty from Tommy Conway, keeping their hopes alive for a play-off spot.
Luton boosted their chances of avoiding consecutive relegations with a slender 1-0 victory over fellow relegation strugglers Derby.
