Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has decided to increase the playing time of his younger squad members in the Premier League as the team shifts its focus to the Europa League—United’s last opportunity to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League.
Currently sitting in 14th place in the Premier League and a staggering 17 points adrift of the top five, United nonetheless progressed to the semi-finals of the Europa League on Thursday following an extraordinary 7-6 aggregate triumph over Olympique Lyonnais.
Amorim has already deployed defenders Harry Amass and Ayden Heaven, both just 18 years old, in several matches this season, while 17-year-old forward Chido Obi has made three appearances to date.
With the aim of clinching the Europa League title— which would guarantee entry into next season’s Champions League—all three youngsters are poised to see increased minutes in the Premier League.
“This isn’t the ideal time or season to give the kids more game time, as they need a solid foundation to truly exhibit their abilities. However, we find ourselves in this situation, and sometimes surprises emerge,” Amorim conveyed to the media.
“Ayden just played, and to be honest, our decision was influenced by injuries we were facing. However, now I regard Ayden as my player; when he is fit and ready to compete, he will certainly feature.”
“Amass performed excellently (against Lyon), and Chido has also shown promise when he played. It’s a challenging moment, undoubtedly not the preferred time for young players to step up, but if we must, we will.”
United will host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, and Amorim took the opportunity to commend his fellow Portuguese manager, Vitor Pereira, who took charge of Wolves in December when they were languishing in 19th position, and has since steered them close to safety.
“I believe he’s doing a remarkable job… He is implementing some changes among the players and has a wealth of quality talent at his disposal,” Amorim remarked.
“(Matheus) Cunha and others possess real quality; they bring freshness, so we recognise it will be a challenging match.”
“We will need strong support from our fans. I understand it’s tough to appeal for support this season, but we require their backing on Sunday.”
Amorim confirmed that both Victor Lindelof and Noussair Mazraoui would be fit to face Wolves after departing Old Trafford during the clash against Lyon due to personal circumstances.
“Everything is fine now,” he stated. “I know football holds immense importance, but some things take precedence. Both will be ready to take on Wolves in the upcoming match.”
