Ruben Amorim (40) suggested on Thursday that Manchester United have the opportunity to transform a dismal season into one that will be remembered, following their remarkable comeback against Lyon, winning 5-4 to advance 7-6 on aggregate to the semi-finals of the Europa League.
With only six minutes of extra time remaining at Old Trafford, United found themselves in dire straits, trailing 4-2 despite Lyon playing with just 10 men after the score was tied at 2-2.
A penalty from Bruno Fernandes initiated the turnaround, followed by goals from Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire, igniting exuberant scenes of celebration.
Amorim revealed that he had recently watched a documentary about United’s historic treble-winning season in 1999, particularly their unforgettable comeback when they overturned a 1-0 deficit in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich to claim a 2-1 victory.
Despite an otherwise disheartening campaign, with the English giants currently positioned 14th in the Premier League, this latest European resurgence will be cherished by United supporters.
“At this stadium, this club, there’s always the belief that anything is possible, and today was another example of that,” Amorim remarked.
“We acknowledge that we are not at our best and we deserve the criticism that comes our way, but we still have time to make something truly special out of this season.”
In the semi-finals, United will face Athletic Bilbao, while Tottenham will compete against Norway’s Bodo/Glimt.
Failing to win the Europa League would likely mean United miss out on European competition next season, a significant financial blow to Amorim’s aspirations of rebuilding his squad in the transfer market.
Conversely, triumphing in Bilbao on May 21 would secure United a lucrative spot in next season’s Champions League.
“A single moment can shift everything in the players’ mindset,” Amorim noted.
“We must maintain our focus on the Europa League and be prepared to take risks in the Premier League, sometimes involving younger players. Our fans need to appreciate that our priority is the Europa League.”
Mainoo, who took on the role of an makeshift centre-forward off the bench, could prove to be a key player in the closing weeks of the season.
After returning from injury for just his second appearance since February, the England international displayed impressive composure to curl in the equaliser.
He is optimistic that their dramatic comeback will serve as motivation for United to clinch the title.
“The performance may not have hit the highest standards, but a win like that can carry immense momentum,” Mainoo stated.
“We’re gathering steam and this could snowball into something much larger. Hopefully, we can go all the way.”
