As always, the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals delivered a thrilling spectacle across the four second-leg matches. From eight teams, we now narrow down to four, bringing us closer to discovering who will grace Munich for the final. Here’s a key stat for each team following the conclusion of the quarter-finals.
7 – Borussia Dortmund’s 2024/25 UEFA Champions League journey may have ended in defeat, but they can take pride in their remarkable performance. A hat-trick from Serhou Guirassy sparked hopes for the Bundesliga side, yet they ultimately fell short. Sitting six points adrift of a domestic UCL qualifying spot, Dortmund finds themselves in a race against time.
Nevertheless, they can celebrate a historic victory over Barcelona, finally defeating them in Europe after six attempts.
24 – Barcelona have been nearly unstoppable in 2025. Their offensive prowess has seen them return to the UCL semi-finals for the first time in six years. The pursuit of a potential third domestic treble remains alive for the Catalan giants.
Their defeat in Germany, however, brought an end to a remarkable 24-match unbeaten streak, making Dortmund the first team to conquer them in 2023.
3 – Aston Villa’s inaugural Champions League campaign has come to a close, leaving them with plenty to cherish. The 1981/82 European Cup winners registered five clean sheets and triumphed in eight matches, including their latest outing on Tuesday. Alas, they fell at the quarter-final hurdle, reminiscent of their 1983 exit.
At least Villa bow out on a high note, with a win over Ligue 1 opponents, marking their third home victory against French sides.
5 – Paris Saint-Germain triumphed with a 5-4 aggregate win in a thrilling contest at Villa Park. Les Parisiens demonstrated their class when it mattered most to advance.
With this victory, they progress to their fifth semi-final in Europe’s premier club tournament, and fourth during the UCL era. Remarkably, PSG have reached this stage in four of their last six campaigns, although they have advanced beyond the semi-finals just once.
15 – Inter Milan continue to prove how formidable they are to beat. Their 4-3 aggregate victory propels the Nerazzurri into their second semi-final in three seasons.
As the last Italian club to lift the UCL trophy, Inter remain unbeaten in their last 15 home fixtures in the competition. Interestingly, Bayern were the last team to claim victory at the San Siro, achieving that in the 2022/23 group stage.
10 – Bayern Munich pushed Inter to their limits despite facing injury challenges. Unfortunately for the Bavarians, they were unable to overturn the first-leg deficit, marking their exit at this stage for the fourth time in five years.
This marks the tenth time Bayern have been eliminated at the quarter-final stage during the Champions League era, a record that no other team shares.
6 – For Real Madrid, the 2024/25 UCL season will be viewed as a significant disappointment. It marks the first time in five years they have lost both legs of a knockout tie, with their last similar elimination also coming against an English side (Manchester City).
More concerning for Real is that Wednesday’s defeat was their sixth in this UCL campaign; a record for failures in a single European season.
2 – Arsenal have finally made their return to the UCL semi-finals after a 16-year absence. The Gunners remain unbeaten against Real Madrid across their four encounters.
In doing so, they join an exclusive group, becoming the eighth team to eliminate Real Madrid on two separate occasions in the European Cup/Champions League’s history. Only Bayern Munich (five) and Juventus (four) have done so more frequently.
