The Wellington Phoenix have confirmed that Ninja A-League head coach Paul Temple will be departing from the club after nearly a decade of association.
Temple’s exit comes after the final match of the season against Western United on Easter Sunday, with the club deciding not to renew the Englishman’s contract.
This will conclude Temple’s two-year term as head coach, during which he guided the Phoenix to be serious contenders in the top six, although they fell short of securing a place in the Finals Series.
Temple started his journey with the Phoenix as a youth team coach in early 2016, later moving up to become the technical director of the club’s academy.
FINAL ROUND STAKES EXPLAINED: The moment of truth for Australia’s champions, five key points to consider
“It’s undoubtedly disappointing for me to part ways with the Phoenix after such a long tenure,” Temple expressed. “However, first-team football is fundamentally a results-driven business, and I’ve always understood that we haven’t met the objectives we established.”
“I can genuinely say that I’ve poured my heart and soul into this project for the past two seasons, and the players have done the same.”
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed coaching this group and collaborating with the staff. We shared a common vision, and I was determined to make history with both the team and the club. Nevertheless, I believe it’s time to move on.”
“I hold nothing but gratitude for the club. Working alongside so many incredible individuals has been a privilege, and my time at the Phoenix has been truly enjoyable.”
“I’m leaving with countless fantastic memories and I’m thankful for all the opportunities and experiences. This journey has made me a better coach than I was previously.”
“I’ve always believed that as a coach, you’re merely the caretaker of the team, and when you take it over, you should strive to leave it in a better state. I believe I have achieved that.”
Phoenix director of football Shaun Gill remarked: “Temps has made a significant impact on the Phoenix.”
“He played a crucial role in transforming the academy during his seven-plus years at the club and has been instrumental in the development of numerous top young footballers from New Zealand, both male and female.”
“Temps has also elevated our women’s programme over the past two years. Under his leadership, the team has become far more competitive and has embraced a more exciting style of play.”
“He has left a lasting legacy, and we wish him all the best for the next chapter in his coaching journey.”
