Legendary Wallabies player Nathan Sharpe has been appointed as the new president of Rugby Australia, as the organisation, which once faced financial difficulties, anticipates being free of debt by 2026.
During the annual general meeting held on Wednesday, Rugby Australia revealed a substantial deficit of $36.8 million after utilising a $80 million credit facility.
However, the financial outlook seems significantly more positive, particularly with a financial boost expected from this year’s British and Irish Lions tour.

Additionally, Rugby Australia has secured a new five-year broadcasting agreement with Nine and Stan, valued at $240 million, as major events approach.
Australia is set to host the Rugby World Cups in 2027 (men’s) and 2029 (women’s), alongside the sevens tournament, which will be a highlight of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
The Lions tour is anticipated to break attendance records, with ticket sales projected to exceed 500,000.
“While there is still a lot to be done, the path to a successful future is evident,” said RA chief executive Phil Waugh.
“Rugby Australia anticipates a record surplus in 2025, which should allow us to exit the credit facility with PEP (Pacific Equity Partners).”
Stan Sport recorded a 40 per cent increase in viewership for the Autumn Nations Series last year compared to 2022.

“Australian rugby has made significant strides over the past year, and although that is certainly encouraging, we recognise that much work lies ahead for the game to reach its full potential,” RA chairman Daniel Herbert remarked.
“The scale of the reforms Rugby Australia has undertaken in 2024 necessitates specific strategic investments, which are reflected in the annual report.
“These investments have redirected the course of Australian rugby and established a robust foundation for the future, as evidenced by the markedly improved five-year broadcasting deal with Nine announced last week.”
Sharpe, a two-time John Eales medallist and veteran of 116 Tests for the Wallabies, currently serves as a director at Talisman.
He takes over the presidency from Joe Roff.
