On Tuesday, Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique (54) proclaimed his team to be the finest in the world after they secured a spot in the Champions League semi-finals with a thrilling 5-4 aggregate victory over Aston Villa.
The French club, still in search of their inaugural title in Europe’s premier club tournament, will face either Arsenal or Real Madrid in their second semi-final appearance in as many years.
Despite a 3-2 defeat on Tuesday in the second leg, Villa could have levelled the aggregate score at 5-5, or even emerged victorious, if not for a stunning series of second-half saves by goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
“I truly believe I have the best squad in the world, and that’s not just about the goalkeeper. At a club like PSG, you have an abundance of quality players,” Luis Enrique stated during an interview with Amazon Prime TV.
“Over the course of both matches, we definitely earned the right to win. I’m thrilled to be able to provide our fans with another semi-final qualification.”
The PSG coach commended Villa’s skill and determination, noting their remarkable comeback from a 2-0 deficit — which put them at 5-1 down on aggregate — to score three goals.
“We began the match strongly, netting two fantastic goals and looking to exploit the spaces available,” he remarked.
“We must remember that this is the Champions League, and we must acknowledge that the opposing team possesses significant quality. Aston Villa exhibited a high level of intensity in the second half.”
“They had nothing to lose after having lost the first match and found themselves trailing at halftime in the second leg.”
