Aston Villa came incredibly close to achieving a Champions League comeback for the history books. Despite finding themselves 5-1 down on aggregate at one stage and managing a 3-2 victory on the night, PSG eliminated the English club with an aggregate score of 5-4, securing their place in the semi-finals.
The atmosphere at Villa Park was electric prior to kick-off, and the home side channeled that energy into some early pressure on the PSG goal. However, the experienced Parisians weathered the storm, enduring a significant onslaught from Villa in the first ten minutes.
Once they survived the initial pressure, the Ligue 1 champions launched a lightning-fast counterattack down the left flank. A crucial moment came when Emiliano Martinez mishandled Bradley Barcola’s cross, allowing Achraf Hakimi to easily slot the ball into the top of the net.

After falling three goals behind on aggregate, Villa faced an uphill battle. By the half-hour mark, the situation began to look dire when Nuno Mendes netted another quick PSG goal, finishing off a counterattack with a powerful shot off the post from a pass by Ousmane Dembele.
Unfazed, Unai Emery’s charges continued to search for openings, and their persistence paid off when Youri Tielemans’ attempt took a deflection off Pacho, sending Gianluigi Donnarumma diving in the wrong direction.
Villa still required a minor miracle after the interval, but PSG are all too familiar with the feeling of being on the receiving end of dramatic comebacks in this tournament.
As the second half began, Villa were on the attack, and the roof of Villa Park nearly blew off when John McGinn surged forward from deep and unleashed a stunning strike that soared over Donnarumma into the top corner.
PSG’s composure began to crack in the deafening atmosphere, and just two minutes later, their aggregate lead was reduced again when Marcus Rashford brilliantly navigated his way to the byline, cutting back for Ezri Konsa to guide it into the bottom corner.
Chances kept coming for Villa, but Konsa, Tielemans, and Marco Asensio all squandered clear opportunities to level the aggregate score.
The Villans pushed on with relentless intent until the very end, but they ultimately fell short of securing that crucial fourth goal, bringing a disappointing conclusion to their European campaign.
PSG advanced to the last four, where they’ll face either Real Madrid or Arsenal as they continue their pursuit of their first Champions League title.
