Newcastle United’s manager Eddie Howe has indicated that he will only return to the helm when he is “100%” fit, following a pneumonia diagnosis, as shared by his assistant Jason Tindall on Tuesday.
The League Cup holders, who are vying for a Champions League position, released a statement on Monday highlighting that the 47-year-old, who was hospitalised last Friday, is on the mend and will miss upcoming Premier League fixtures against Crystal Palace and Aston Villa.
Howe extended his congratulations to the team following their impressive 4-1 victory over Manchester United on Sunday, which has helped them temporarily reclaim a spot in the top four. He also expressed his gratitude for the support messages he has received.
Tindall addressed the media on the eve of Newcastle’s clash with Palace, asserting: “Since that announcement, our communication has been limited. He’s receiving excellent care and will return when he feels completely ready to take charge of the team.”
Currently, there is no set timeline for Howe’s return. With Newcastle sitting just a point behind third-placed Nottingham Forest, Tindall may find himself leading the side during this crucial phase of the Premier League season.
When queried about Howe’s involvement, Tindall commented: “With the manager not present, it’s evident that he is unwell in hospital, and our contact regarding preparations has been minimal, similar to last week.
“However, we understand the expectations and the standards we set for one another on a daily basis, and we will maintain that until the manager rejoins us.”
Riding high on form, Newcastle, with seven league matches remaining, could leapfrog Forest into third place if they manage at least a draw against Palace at St James’ Park on Wednesday.
The top five teams in the Premier League will secure a place in the Champions League for the following season.
