Hawthorn’s head coach, Sam Mitchell, has shared the reaction he faced from Port Adelaide supporters during the three-quarter time break, following an incident where a fan was removed for taunting him on Sunday evening.
The Hawks found themselves trailing by as much as 71 points in a fiery encounter with the Power, prompting some distinctly inappropriate comments from the crowd.
While Mitchell claims he wasn’t involved in the decision to expel the fan, he noted that the entire section seemed to believe he had a role in it.

“I’m just starting to see the funny side of it now, but as I walked down at three-quarter time when we were clearly in a tough spot, someone from the crowd gave me a fair amount of banter and heckling,” Mitchell recounted on Nine’s Footy Classified.
“I didn’t realise at the time, but by the time I got down there, they had already kicked him out.
“When I walked back up to begin the fourth quarter, the whole section started chanting ‘dibber dobber’ at me. I hadn’t heard that term in ages.”
“This whole section just called me a dibber dobber. I didn’t find it funny at the moment as I had more pressing concerns, but I woke up this morning with a laugh about it.”

The stringent response from Adelaide Oval’s security team likely followed a similar incident involving a fan and Geelong stars Patrick Dangerfield and Bailey Smith on Thursday night.
After receiving inappropriate comments directed at Dangerfield post-match, Smith notably reacted by giving the heckler the double bird.
