Virgil van Dijk is anticipating a “significant summer” for Liverpool in the transfer window as he edges closer to finalising a deal that will secure his future at Anfield.
Under the guidance of Arne Slot, the team is on the verge of clinching their 20th English league title, which would match the record, following their 2-1 win over West Ham at home on Sunday, where Van Dijk netted the decisive goal.
Currently, Liverpool holds a commanding 13-point lead over second-placed Arsenal with just six matches left to play, and they could potentially seal the title as early as next weekend, should favourable results occur.
Van Dijk’s future is expected to be solidified later this week with the announcement of a two-year contract aligning with Mohamed Salah’s recent extension.
While forward Federico Chiesa was the only outfield addition during last year’s post-season transfer window, his appearances have been limited, prompting Liverpool manager Arne Slot to seek further reinforcements.
“I believe Liverpool should be in a position to contend for titles in the coming years,” stated Van Dijk, who captained Liverpool for the 100th time in the league against West Ham.
“Regardless of the movements in and out of players, I anticipate it will be a significant summer. I trust the board is planning accordingly to ensure it’s a successful one for us all.
“We can definitely improve. The quality of the Premier League is extraordinary this season; it’s remarkable how any team can triumph over another.”
The 33-year-old Dutch international mentioned that Liverpool stands to benefit from a pre-season with no major international tournaments this year.
“This year, we have a training camp, allowing time for the team to focus on the manager’s objectives, which I believe will enhance our performance,” he commented.
“A proper pre-season will undoubtedly assist the club in achieving even greater consistency than we’ve shown so far.”
Van Dijk is poised to become only the second captain in Liverpool’s history to lift the Premier League trophy, and he’s eager to add to that success.
“Achieving success with Liverpool, embodying the club’s culture—it’s ingrained in me,” he remarked.
“My love for the club is evident. You can see it in how I talk about Liverpool, the effort I put in on and off the pitch, and that dedication will always remain.”
