Josh Schuster made his much-anticipated comeback to rugby league in the NSW Cup as his Rabbitohs team suffered a significant defeat against the North Sydney Bears.
The South Sydney newcomer entered the fray from the bench in the 25th minute, making an immediate impact by being held up over the try-line just moments later.
At that point, the Bears were in control, leading 14-0, thanks to tries from Regan Hughes and Tyrell Neiufi, along with a penalty goal.
Schuster was pivotal in play as he frequently operated as both first and second receiver early on. He provided a brilliant assist in the 32nd minute, delivering a trademark no-look cut-out pass to winger Max Lehmann, who finished it for a try.

The former Manly utility demonstrated his kicking prowess shortly after, narrowly missing a 40/20 attempt due to an unfortunate bounce just before half-time.
However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing for Schuster, who sent a kick out on the full just four minutes into the second half. In the 50th minute, he attempted an ambitious pass that went behind his outside backs and rolled out of play while the Rabbitohs were pressing for a try.
Schuster’s involvement in the match ended prematurely as he returned to the bench with the score at 24-4.
The Bears ultimately claimed the victory, finishing 30-12 despite Lehmann securing a hat-trick.

Schuster’s last game in the NRL was in 2023, and he had played four matches for Blacktown Workers last year before parting ways with Manly amicably.
The 23-year-old was acquired by South Sydney during the off-season but only made his return to the sport on Sunday after recovering from a calf injury.
Wayne Bennett currently faces a dilemma in the halves, with Cody Walker and Jamie Humphreys out injured, while Jayden Sullivan is also at risk of a one-match suspension.
