Nuno Mendes’ decisive strike in stoppage time capped off Paris St Germain’s convincing 3-1 victory over Aston Villa in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday night.
Mendes found the back of the net just two minutes into added time, after the Ligue 1 champions had seized control with goals from Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, following an unexpected opener from Morgan Rogers.
“
With a two-goal lead in hand, possession-enthusiast PSG are in a favourable position, yet Luis Enrique is not looking ahead further than next Tuesday’s return leg.
“We’re not going to approach it with any speculation. We’ve never played the game that way, especially not with a squad of this calibre,” he reiterated.
“If we want to progress to the semi-finals, we have to go there aiming to win. We need to push the opponent and take advantage of the space available to us. “
PSG’s quick transitions could pose a threat in Birmingham, as Villa will have to overcome their disadvantage and cannot afford to sit back.
“Aston Villa will need to be more aggressive than they were here, which could be intriguing as long as we maintain our level of play,” noted Luis Enrique.
“This is bound to be another thrilling and challenging match. I have no doubt it will be tough, much like it was at Anfield, but once again, the idea of ‘speculating’ is not something we entertain,” he added.
On the other hand, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery does not feel that the late third goal alters the situation significantly.
“With that goal, the circumstances remain roughly the same — we still need to win next week. I consider Villa Park our fortress,” he stated.
“We must be more resolute, disciplined, and I believe we were today. However, the result isn’t ideal; it’s certainly not what we hoped for.
“But there’s still a full 90 minutes to play.
