Phil Waugh, the chief executive of Rugby Australia, is open to the possibility of the new Wallabies coach concurrently holding a position within Super Rugby, as the search for Joe Schmidt’s successor continues into its third month.
On Wednesday morning, Waugh indicated that the hunt for Schmidt’s replacement is “well and truly in the final stages”.
Schmidt has confirmed he will conclude his tenure after the British and Irish Lions tour, followed by a concluding Bledisloe Cup series.
Les Kiss, the Queensland Reds coach, is currently the leading candidate for the position. However, Michael Cheika, Dan McKellar, Stephen Larkham, former Wales coach Warren Gatland, and ex-England coach Stuart Lancaster have all been mentioned in connection with the role.

Permitting the Wallabies coach to juggle another coaching role would signify a departure from the traditional approach.
Historically, the focus has been on appointing a Wallabies head coach, often overshadowing the contributions of assistant coaches and the dynamics within Super Rugby, Waugh mentioned to media, including Wide World of Sports on Wednesday.
“Our aim is to secure the finest coaches within the Super Rugby framework; without success at that level, winning Test matches becomes increasingly challenging,” Waugh stated.
“We’re optimistic about striking the right balance between shared resources and ensuring we have the leading coaches guiding the international program.”
“We aspire to achieve the best possible outcome, and if that means shared roles or collaborations, we will explore that option.”
Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, a convert from league, expressed that there is “no urgency” in finding Schmidt’s successor and that the playing group trusts the Rugby Australia board’s decision-making.
“Personally, I’m not feeling any pressure about it,” he commented.
“As a team, we have faith in the board to select the right person for the role. I believe there’s no rush; it’s crucial for the organisation to take its time as this is a significant decision.”
Recently, it was reported that his Wallabies teammate Noah Lolesio may jeopardise his position in the squad for the Lions tour after signing a contract to play in Japan.
Suaalii acknowledged the rationale behind players choosing such paths.
The incoming Wallabies coach will lead the team through the home World Cup next year, with Schmidt’s final game in charge set for October 4.
