Hawthorn’s key player Will Day is set to be sidelined for up to four months in a significant setback for the club.
The 23-year-old is scheduled to undergo surgery due to a stress fracture in his foot, which will keep him out for a substantial part of the AFL season.
Day had kicked off the season impressively, helping the Hawks ascend to the top of the ladder, remaining undefeated after four matches.
Rob McCartney, the club’s general manager of football, expressed his support for the former No. 13 draft pick following the announcement of his lengthy absence.
“While this is undeniably a tough blow for Will, the team has already come together to provide him with support during this early phase,” he stated in an official club announcement.

“Will is one of the most determined and resilient young individuals I have come across, and these qualities will surely help him as he embarks on his rehabilitation journey.
“With our medical team’s knowledge and expertise, I’m confident Will will make his return to the field before the season wraps up.”
Since his debut in 2020, Day has netted 18 goals in 74 appearances for Hawthorn, although he had previously faced a similar stress injury last season.
The medical team is optimistic that the upcoming surgery will help mitigate the chances of Day’s injury recurring in the future.
