Former star Billy Slater has singled out Jack Howarth for a potential debut in the State of Origin, asserting that the Storm centre possesses the “X-factor” necessary to thrive in representative football.
At just 22 years old, Howarth has been in the spotlight since his youth, but he truly started to find his rhythm in the top grade last season when Melbourne reached the grand final.
Known for his tall frame, Howarth has also filled in at back-row, consistently impressing observers with his contributions in both attack and defence.
He showcased his ability in Sunday’s decisive victory over the Sea Eagles, amassing 107 running metres, breaking three tackles, and scoring a try.

In a recent conversation on Nine’s Billy Slater Podcast, the club legend and current coach of the Maroons didn’t hold back in endorsing the Storm prodigy.
“Jack is a fantastic player and a tremendous person,” Slater remarked.
“He has always possessed that X-factor that aligns perfectly with representative football.
“A big bloke, he has the versatility to play in the back-row or as a centre. His performance last year during the grand final run was outstanding.”

“He’s still gaining valuable knowledge about the game, but being on the field with Cameron Munster greatly benefits both his attack and defence.
“It’s certainly within his reach to play for Origin in the future, but for now, he is focused on developing his skills at the Melbourne Storm, where he is excelling.”
Despite Queensland having numerous options in the centre position, Howarth’s early-season form positions him as a genuine contender.
While Valentine Holmes brings substantial Origin experience, he is struggling with a faltering Dragons side.
The other current selection, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, has yet to shine at the start of the 2025 season, while Dane Gagai appeared in only one match and is beginning to see the effects of age.
Howarth hails from Mackay but moved to Brisbane early in life, where he started his junior football career with the Easts Tigers.
