Liverpool’s captain, Virgil van Dijk, has confirmed that there has been progress regarding a new contract with the club as the summer transfer window approaches.
This week, following the team’s 3-2 defeat to Fulham on Saturday, the Dutch international mentioned that discussions about his contract have advanced.
With his 34th birthday coming up in July, Van Dijk addressed speculation surrounding his future with the club.
“There is indeed some progress. I’m not sure what will happen next; we’ll have to wait and see. These are internal matters, and we’ll go from there.”
“I have a deep affection for the club and the fans, who have consistently supported us. We aimed to give them something to celebrate against Fulham. I hope they turn out in full force against West Ham on Sunday and make Anfield an extraordinary atmosphere as always.”
Meanwhile, Van Dijk’s teammates Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold are expected to depart at the season’s end, as manager Arne Slot actively seeks replacements.
Nevertheless, with positive developments concerning one of the world’s premier defenders, he might save the club from having to spend heavily when the transfer window opens.
The 33-year-old reflected on the defeat to Fulham, acknowledging that the team fell short on the day.
“It was a disappointing performance from all of us. There were individual instances that needed to be handled better. Such moments can occur in games, but if you allow the opposition back into the match, they’ll capitalise, as they did by scoring three goals and putting us under pressure.”
“Perfection is unattainable, and we were careless, which led to us being punished swiftly. It’s undeniably a tough battle. Even though we maintained our belief and created chances, based on our first-half performance, the result is hard to dispute.”
