Melbourne Victory made a significant mark in the Ninja A-League by clinching their sixth consecutive victory, defeating the struggling Western Sydney Wanderers 1-0.
An own goal in the 18th minute from Western Sydney’s Danika Matos propelled the flying Victory back within two points of league leaders Melbourne City in a rescheduled clash on Sunday.
Currently enjoying a club-record unbeaten streak of 11 matches, the second-placed Victory also set a new milestone for the most consecutive wins in the league.
With only two rounds left, Victory find themselves in close pursuit of their rivals City, while the Wanderers remain anchored at the bottom of the table.
Victory started strong, as Gielnik struck the post in the opening six minutes during their visit to Western Sydney.
They took the lead in the 18th minute when an attempt from Gielnik inadvertently surprised Matos, resulting in the Wanderers defender heading the ball into her own net.
Although Gielnik found the back of the net again six minutes later, the goal was ruled offside.
As half-time drew near, the Wanderers pressed for an equaliser, but they could not breach Victory’s defence.
Western Sydney thought they had equalised with 16 minutes remaining when a save from Victory goalkeeper Courtney Newbon led to a loose ball. However, an offside flag halted their celebrations despite their protests.
A heartwarming moment unfolded as Anika Stajcic came off the bench for the Wanderers, having impressed at the NPLW NSW level. This marked her debut in the A-League, with her father, Alen, the Wanderers’ Isuzu UTE A-League head coach, watching from the stands.
