Knights star Fletcher Sharpe is confident he can thrive alongside new signing Dylan Brown, set to join the club in 2026 as the game’s $13 million player.
Sharpe has made an impressive start to the season with Newcastle, establishing himself as a strong contender for the long-term five-eighth role, even with Brown’s arrival on the horizon.
The 20-year-old, who recently secured a new three-year contract, is anticipated to partner the Kiwi international for the foreseeable future.
Although Brown has primarily played at five-eighth throughout his career, it’s likely he will take on the No. 7 jersey when he changes clubs.

Sharpe, meanwhile, will retain the No. 6 jersey and states there were no discussions regarding his position within the club upon Brown’s signing.
“Not at all – there hasn’t been any conversation at the club on that front,” he told Wide World of Sports.
“Dylan is an incredible and thrilling player. The way he plays, we could definitely complement each other’s games.”
“As a team, we haven’t delved into it much – our focus is on the current season.”
During an appearance on Freddy and The Eighth on Wide World of Sports, Sharpe mentioned he would be ready to take on the halfback role if needed, although that seems unlikely.

Sharpe has showcased versatility in his gameplay since making his first-grade debut last year, providing a valuable asset by being able to cover various positions in the backline.
Pre-season discussions had raised questions regarding Sharpe’s preferred position, but the Cessnock speedster has now clarified his stance.

“From my debut, I was always a half or five-eighth until around 17, when I transitioned to fullback due to an injury and found it hard to switch back,” Sharpe remarked.
“Fullback is definitely where I prefer to play, but with KP [Kalyn Ponga] owning that position, I’m relishing the opportunity to build a partnership with him.”
“Last season, I played a few different roles… experiencing various positions can only enhance my game, allowing me to understand the expectations of others and vice versa.”
The relationship with Ponga is still developing, but their synergy on the field has already sparked excitement among Knights supporters for what’s to come.

Sharpe commended the Knights captain and believes there is still ample room for development, especially with Brown’s anticipated arrival.
“He’s been incredible,” Sharpe shared.
“When I first broke into the side last year and played at fullback, he guided me on what was expected and what my role would be within the team.”
“This year, establishing a partnership with him has been a fantastic experience.”
“We’re working on a few things together… it’s all quite exciting.”
