AC Milan’s campaign has significantly underperformed, but manager Sergio Conceicao believes a victory in the Coppa Italia could pave the way for a return to European competitions ahead of their semi-final first leg against Inter Milan on Wednesday.
Sitting ninth in Serie A with 47 points, 20 points adrift of leaders Inter, a cup triumph might be the club’s only opportunity to secure European football next season.
“We recognise the importance of qualifying for Europe. However, we need to focus solely on this match and not the others. We understand this is the most direct path to Europe,” Conceicao stated during a press conference on Tuesday.
“Of course, winning a trophy would bring me great satisfaction, but we first have to overcome Inter and then look to the final. Speculation about the future isn’t my style; I prefer to focus on winning match by match.”
Conceicao acknowledged that the current position of the club is not where he envisions it to be.
“Milan isn’t accustomed to being in this position, but there are still many matches left to play,” he commented.
“I’m not entirely happy with the way things have gone over the past few months. There have been moments of joy, but many more of disappointment. We must improve, but it’s a challenge that everyone faces.”
In their three encounters this season, Milan has secured victories in two matches, while Inter managed to earn a 1-1 draw in February.
“These matches have been crucial for us. The circumstances are different, with varied players on the pitch. We’ll see if we can perform well tomorrow and gauge Inter’s capabilities,” Conceicao noted.
“They are a formidable team, known for their strong tactics and a coach who has been leading them for quite some time.”
