Borussia Monchengladbach significantly bolstered their chances of clinching a top-six finish in the Bundesliga after narrowly defeating RB Leipzig 1-0. This victory marked their first success of the season against an opponent ranked ninth or higher at the start of the matchday.
The clash was between fifth-placed Gladbach and seventh-placed Leipzig, taking on the feel of a crucial six-pointer as the season draws to a close. Gladbach were the pursuers, and a win would see them leapfrog their rivals in the standings.
The home team began on the offensive and created the first real opportunity of the match when Alassane Plea flicked the ball on to Robin Hack, who unfortunately saw his volley collected easily by Maarten Vandevoordt.
Leipzig, on the other hand, found their chances mostly restricted to long-range efforts, epitomised by Xavi Simons’ shot that scarcely made it to the goal line.
The lacklustre first half surprised many, given that both teams were at the upper echelon of the table. However, with plenty to play for in the second half, fans were hopeful for a more lively display.
Leipzig aimed to change the pace early in the second half, creating a brilliant goal-scoring opportunity within a minute, but Christoph Baumgartner’s strike flew inches over the crossbar. The Austrian was in the mix again shortly after, as he made an incisive run into the box, only to send a header just wide.
Those missed chances proved costly for the visitors, as Gladbach soon broke the deadlock.
Ko Itakura appeared set to score with a goalbound shot, but it was deflected into the path of Plea, who finished from close range.
Plea was brimming with confidence following his goal and nearly doubled his tally when he struck the woodwork with a shot from the edge of the area, which rattled off the post.
Another chance hit the woodwork 20 minutes from the finish, this time as Nico Elvedi saw his header bounce off the outside of the post.
The hosts might consider themselves unlucky not to have gone further ahead to avoid a tense finish, especially after Plea struck the woodwork for a third time in the half. Yet, their failure to convert those opportunities meant they had to survive an anxious final few minutes.
Ultimately, they managed to hold on for a vital three points in their quest for a top-six finish, while Leipzig endured their fourth consecutive away match without scoring in the Bundesliga.
