Ajax’s head coach Francesco Farioli has labelled captain Jordan Henderson as ‘the benchmark’ for his squad ahead of the upcoming fixture against PSV this Sunday.
The match, held in Eindhoven, is pivotal in the Eredivisie title race, with Ajax holding a six-point advantage over PSV as only eight games remain in the season.
During a press conference on Friday, Farioli reflected on Ajax’s recent setbacks, acknowledging the previous season’s struggles that left them trailing PSV by a considerable 35 points in the league.
Farioli has emphasised the significance of Jordan Henderson in Ajax’s revival, asserting, “I consistently demonstrate how essential it was for me to appoint him as the team captain.”

“What he contributes to the team both on and off the pitch sets the standard in terms of quality, attitude, and a winning mentality. These factors are crucial for our development, alongside his abilities on the field, including his grasp of the game and adaptability.”
Henderson joined Ajax in January 2024 following a brief spell with Saudi club Al-Ettifaq. The former captain of Liverpool has since made 51 appearances for Ajax across all competitions and was appointed as captain before the start of the current campaign.
Brobbey
In contrast to Henderson, striker Brian Brobbey has faced considerable criticism under Farioli. The Ajax academy graduate has netted only four goals in the Eredivisie this season, but this has not deterred Farioli from praising his player.
“He remains a pivotal part of the squad. This season, particularly in the first half, we struggled to score goals, and while his contributions have not met previous levels, his growth throughout the year has been remarkable,” Farioli stated.
“He’s improving all the time. In the last few matches, he has performed exceptionally well. He’s becoming more mature and responsible; he seeks to assist his team by passing to teammates in better positions instead of just shooting. We need him to step up in this final stretch.”

Midfielder Kenneth Taylor has shown significant improvement and is now the team’s leading goal scorer in the Eredivisie, having netted eight goals this season. “The most vital aspect is scoring goals. I don’t mind who scores them. Brian (Brobbey) also provides significant support for Kenneth (Taylor) through assists or by drawing defenders toward him, which allows for more space. Kenneth and Kian (Fitz-Jim) have greatly benefited from his presence.”
