Harry Kane, the England captain, is determined to make history by becoming his country’s longest-serving international player and aims to cap off his career with World Cup success in 2026.
The 31-year-old forward achieved his 105th cap during Monday’s 3-0 qualifying victory over Latvia, during which he also scored his 71st international goal.
This match marked Kane’s 105th appearance in the England shirt, leaving him just 20 appearances shy of goalkeeper Peter Shilton’s all-time record for the national team.
“It’s definitely within reach. I’ve expressed my desire to represent England for as long as I can,” Kane stated.
“There are plenty of matches before the World Cup, and ideally, there will be eight games during that tournament.”
“This week marks ten years since I first played for England. It’s been an incredible journey, filled with highs and lows.”
He further commented: “We are entering a new era, a new chapter, and I’m more enthusiastic than ever about extending my time here, making deep runs in tournaments, and creating memorable moments for our supporters. Winning a major trophy is what we all yearn for.”
On another note, Kane remarked that players often lack a voice in scheduling matters, yet he has no intention of turning down opportunities for trophies.
With a more demanding Champions League calendar, an expanded World Cup, and the recent growth of the European Championship, top athletes find themselves competing more than ever before.
Kane’s club, Bayern Munich, is in the running for the Champions League and is participating in this summer’s revised Club World Cup.
Amidst an international window, Kane might face the prospect of missing out on a meaningful summer break.
“To be honest, I don’t think players are given much consideration. However, everyone wants their share of the spotlight, their tournament, or their prize, and players have to adapt,” he remarked.
“That being said, I’m passionate about football, so I won’t complain about playing.
“I believe that with proper management alongside your coaches and clubs, there are ways to ensure more rest during certain periods.”
