Germany’s head coach Julian Nagelsmann has underscored the significance of cultivating a winning mentality as they gear up for their encounter with Italy at San Siro this Thursday.
This match marks the first leg of their Nations League quarter-final, with the second leg scheduled for Sunday at Signal Iduna Park.
“I’ve repeatedly mentioned how crucial it is for us to grow accustomed to winning,” Nagelsmann stated during a press conference on Wednesday.
“Our aim is to secure as many victories as we can and clinch the Nations League, but we acknowledge that we’re facing a formidable opponent in Italy.”
“We need to focus on defeating them first, and then we can discuss our chances of winning the trophy.”
Since the retirement of long-time goalkeeper Manuel Neuer from the national team in August, Germany has faced challenges in settling on a consistent goalkeeper.
Following a serious injury to first-choice Marc-Andre ter Stegen in September while playing for Barcelona, both Alexander Nubel from VfB Stuttgart and Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann have been given opportunities to prove themselves, with Baumann set to take the starting role against Italy.
“Alex (Nubel) dealt with the decision very professionally, which I found to be very encouraging. Ultimately, it was a very close decision. Both players are having solid seasons and performing consistently well,” Nagelsmann shared.
“Oli (Baumann) has displayed a bit more consistency at this level. We’ve communicated to both that this selection is specifically for these two matches, as we also have an excellent goalkeeper in Marc (ter Stegen), and we will reassess after the games.”
Over 3,500 German supporters are expected to travel to Milan for the match, something Nagelsmann views as a testament to the growing confidence in his team.
“It’s a tremendous compliment to the squad. They’ve rekindled a strong connection with the fans,” he remarked.
“I interpret it that way, and I believe both home and away matches have their unique attractions. However, having 3,500 fans supporting us in an away game is immensely beneficial.”
