Italy will be missing striker Mateo Retegui for both matches in their UEFA Nations League quarter-final against Germany due to a thigh injury, as confirmed by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) on Wednesday.
Born in Argentina, Retegui currently plays for Atalanta and is the leading scorer in Serie A this season with 22 goals. He has also netted six times for Italy in 18 appearances since his debut in 2023.
“Striker Mateo Retegui underwent instrumental tests this morning for a muscle strain in his right thigh and has been deemed unavailable for both fixtures against Germany. He has returned to his club for further assessment,” stated an FIGC announcement.
Fiorentina’s Moise Kean, the second highest scorer in the Italian league this season with 15 goals, is now expected to take on the role of leading striker for manager Luciano Spalletti against Germany.
The first leg will be hosted by Italy at the San Siro on Thursday, with the return leg set to take place in Dortmund on Sunday.
The team that emerges victorious from this tie will host the semi-finals and finals of the Nations League in June.
