Chris Wood has propelled Nottingham Forest into an unexpected Champions League race, and now the striker is eager to net the goals that could help New Zealand achieve a historic feat at the World Cup.
The New Zealand side is the strong favourite to emerge from the Oceania region over the upcoming week, aiming to reach the World Cup for only the third time in its history.
During their previous appearances at the finals in 1982 and 2010, New Zealand struggled, failing to win any of their six matches.
With Wood captaining the squad, he expressed confidence in the team’s ability to secure a World Cup victory while speaking to local media on Tuesday.
“Our objective will be to win a match and progress to the group stages if we qualify,” the in-form 33-year-old declared on Radio New Zealand.
“It’s all about the mindset, and I truly believe we can achieve that. Our squad is continually improving and making strides to bigger, more prominent clubs.
“They are showcasing their talent on the global stage, proving they’re capable of competing in the top leagues around the world.
Wood is experiencing the finest season of his career, scoring 18 goals in the Premier League and standing alongside the likes of Alexander Isak and Erling Haaland in the scoring charts.
His achievements have been instrumental in elevating Forest to third in the league table, a position that would secure Champions League football if maintained.
Other New Zealand players based in Europe include Marko Stamenic at Olympiacos in Greece, Tyler Bindon at Reading, and Matt Garbett with Breda in the Netherlands.
The 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico will feature 48 teams, guaranteeing a spot for a team from Oceania.
To secure their place, New Zealand must first overcome Fiji on Friday in Wellington, followed by a crucial qualifier against either New Caledonia or Tahiti on Monday.
“This is arguably one of the best teams we’ve had in our history,” said Wood, who has scored 41 goals in 80 appearances for New Zealand.
“However, they must demonstrate that on the pitch to be considered among the greats. Qualifying for the World Cup is the pathway to achieving that.
