The resilience shown by Manchester United following setbacks in their last two matches highlights the club’s development, according to coach Ruben Amorim, as they prepare for a Premier League clash against Leicester City on Sunday.
Last week, United held second-placed Arsenal to a 1-1 draw, managing to secure a point, before coming from behind to defeat Real Sociedad 4-1 on Thursday, which saw them progress to the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
“I believe our last few matches have helped us grasp the concept of what we want to achieve. We’re beginning to better understand the game strategies we’ve set out,” Amorim stated during a press conference.
“We’re allowing the team more time to secure victories and draws. We’re not letting a single goal rattle us; we’re maintaining our composure when faced with additional setbacks. We’re learning to read the game’s situations and are gaining a clearer vision of our desired style of play…
“I’m aware that in football, particularly given our current circumstances, fortunes can change rapidly. Our aim is to stay consistent, not getting overly excited or too downcast about our situation. The focus remains on persevering; we need to endure.”
Currently positioned 14th with 34 points from 28 matches, United are eager to improve their ranking against Leicester, who sit at the bottom of the table having lost their last five league fixtures.
“Every game is vital and we must maintain the mentality that we can secure wins. It’s irrelevant how long we have to recuperate or prepare for the next match,” Amorim asserted.
“We are capable of achieving this. Our performance against Arsenal demonstrated that we must remain grounded, a sentiment that is often overlooked. We need to approach the Leicester game with the same mindset we had against Real Sociedad.
“Winning is crucial for enhancing our position in the standings, but most importantly, we need to continue fostering that winning mentality and evolving as a team.”
The Portuguese manager also commended 18-year-old defender Ayden Heaven, who joined the club from Arsenal in February and has made a strong impression in his recent outings.
“If he keeps up this level of performance, he will definitely feature more. Naturally, he’s young and hasn’t had much playing time this season—perhaps just 45 minutes for the Under-21s, followed by a few minutes here and now a complete game,” Amorim commented.
“I’m really impressed by his confidence and speed; he’s good at defending in the box and seems quite well-rounded. Nonetheless, there’s still considerable work ahead for him in the Premier League.”
