Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold is facing a serious fitness concern ahead of the League Cup final against Newcastle United this weekend, following an injury he picked up during Tuesday’s Champions League round of 16 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, according to manager Arne Slot.
PSG progressed to the quarter-finals after defeating Liverpool 4-1 on penalties at Anfield, having edged the second leg 1-0.
The 26-year-old Alexander-Arnold was substituted in the 73rd minute for Jarell Quansah, with reports from UK media indicating that he has sustained an ankle injury.
“(Trent) had to come off. That’s never a good sign,” Slot commented.
“From what I’ve gathered from those who witnessed the incident, it didn’t look promising. So, I would be quite surprised if he is fit to play on Sunday.”
Meanwhile, centre-back Ibrahima Konate also exited the match limping during the second half of extra time, although Slot suggested that it was likely just an issue of fatigue.
The loss of Alexander-Arnold would be a significant setback for the England national team as they prepare to face Albania on March 21 and Latvia three days later in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
