Mika Biereth always knew he wanted to represent Denmark, despite having the option to play for Bosnia, England, and Germany.
Following an impressive tally of ten goals in just eight appearances for AS Monaco in Ligue 1, the 22-year-old forward became a clear choice for Brian Riemer, who announced his squad on Tuesday for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Portugal.
“It’s a proud moment for me to be selected for the senior national team; it’s something I’ve worked diligently towards for quite some time. I can hardly wait,” Biereth remarked to TV2 Sport after the announcement.
Biereth, acquired by Monaco for €13 million from Sturm Graz in January, has made five appearances for the Danish Under-19 side and six for the Under-21s. However, this did not guarantee his spot in the senior team, as he had the unique opportunity to choose among four nations having yet to play at the senior A-international level.
Born in London in 2003 to a Danish-German father and a Bosnian mother, Biereth was also eligible to represent Bosnia, Germany, and England. He confirmed that he has been in contact with the national team coaches from all four countries.
“It was important for me to be respectful to the other nations involved; however, it wasn’t a particularly tough decision for me. It was a bit of a process, but now that process is complete, and I’ve made my choice. Ultimately, it wasn’t a hard decision at all,” he explained.
“Having the chance to choose from four nations is quite a rare situation, but there was really only one option I wanted to pursue, and that was Denmark,” Biereth added.
Denmark will take on Portugal in the Nations League on 20 and 23 March.
