The Dolphins are set to face off against the Rabbitohs, but they will do so without some key players after three athletes chose to remain in Queensland due to warnings surrounding Cyclone Alfred.
Kodi Nikorima, Mark Nicholls, and Kenny Bromwich have opted not to make the journey to Sydney. Instead, they will stay in their home state.
Nikorima is expecting a child with his wife, Bree, while Nicholls’ residence faces the risk of severe cyclone-related damage.
Bromwich, who was designated as the 18th man, has also chosen to stay back to support his family during this challenging time.
Andrew Johns has expressed his support for their decision.
“I believe it would be incredibly difficult (to leave their families at such a time),” he remarked on Wide World of Sports’ Immortal Behaviour.
“I commend their choice. It must have been a tough call to make, especially considering it’s game one after four months of preparation.
“I probably would have played (if I were in their position), but I completely understand their reasoning. I think everyone does. It must be a harrowing wait as the cyclone approaches.”
