Glen Hoddle, the former England and Tottenham manager, shared his thoughts on Tottenham’s lacklustre display following their 1-0 defeat to AZ Alkmaar in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League Round of 16.
Alkmaar continued their strong form, maintaining an unbeaten run of 13 home games in the tournament by outplaying the Premier League side.
Despite being the favourites going into the match, Tottenham were outshot 12-7, even though they dominated possession with over 60% of the ball.
The lone goal of the match came from an unfortunate own goal by Lucas Bergvall, who attempted to block a shot from Spurs academy graduate Troy Parrott but inadvertently redirected it into his own net.
While there were additional chances which indicated that a 1-0 scoreline was harsh on Tottenham, Hoddle seems to concur.
“Tottenham have been far from their best, yet they’re only one goal adrift. AZ could’ve easily been two or three ahead by half-time,” he remarked during an appearance on TNT Sports.
“Their performance was rather uninspired. However, this result is likely more favourable for Tottenham than it is for AZ.”
“For a side to underperform and only return home with a single goal deficit, they should consider that a victory of sorts.”
“Not in terms of their play, but certainly regarding the result,” Hoddle concluded.
