Rene Meulensteen did not hold back in his assessment of Manchester United’s 1-1 stalemate with Real Sociedad in the UEFA Europa League’s round of 16.
Having dedicated over ten years to Manchester United in various capacities, including youth teams, reserves, and the senior squad, Meulensteen has a wealth of experience with the club.
During his appearance on BBC Radio 5 Live, the Dutch coach shared his thoughts on the Red Devils’ performance against Real Sociedad. His compatriot, Joshua Zirkzee, netted the opening goal, but La Real quickly equalised when United captain Bruno Fernandes was penalised for a handball.
“Looking back, Ruben Amorim will recognise there were several opportunities to add to the scoreline. If United had managed to go 2-0 up, they likely would have controlled the match. That penalty brought Real Sociedad back into contention,” he remarked.
Currently languishing in 14th position in the Premier League, Manchester United has also faced scrutiny over off-field decisions made by owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
Meulensteen expressed his belief that the current Manchester United bears little resemblance to the successful side he once knew.
“Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, Manchester United has not been the same. The club has seen a steady decline. Moreover, there are numerous issues surrounding the club that have led to unrest. It’s a club in turmoil, both on and off the pitch,” the former coach stated.
